To go viral on Linkedin is to tell a good story.

I often treat my LinkedIn profile as a billboard for my career and craft posts like they are the best kind of free advertising for myself. Like any good advertisement, a good self interest LinkedIn post should provoke emotion within the reader, be short and to the point and get people talking about you.

Typically my LinkedIn newsfeed is full of reposts of articles, lifehacks, ideas worth sharing and shared moments of success. Out of all of these different kinds of posts I suggest to use a moment of success to capture the attention of your network by writing a story worth telling. Storytelling will help you tap into the power of LinkedIn- I have seen people build an entire career around storytelling after one viral LinkedIn post!

Keep reading to find out how I used a moment of success in my life to write a LinkedIn post that increased views to my LinkedIn profile, facilitated meaningful interactions with my connections and gained followers.

  1. Write an “alley -oop” post first to begin your storytelling

First things first- to get your moment of success post to go viral you want to set the stage by writing at least one post beforehand talking about a challenge you are experiencing in your life.

Be honest, be vulnerable. Now more than ever keeping it real on social media is valuable- I think we are all tired of the fake.

This is an “alley-oop” to yourself because by setting the stage you are setting up your moment of success post with a good plot- welcome to storytelling!

Recently I decided to take advantage of a moment in my life where I had to rise to the occasion and failure was not an option and tell a good story. I got laid off from my job due to covid-19 and decided to write the following post about it.

What I did:

My “alley-oop” post I wrote to begin telling my moment of success story

This post allowed me to control the narrative around me loosing my job, set the tone for my job hunting and not to mention engage with my network in a meaningful way. The benefit to this was that people reached out to me directly offering help with job leads.

What you can do:

ProTip 1: Share what problem you are looking to solve and how you plan to do so. Talk about an upcoming project (I suggest personal so you can be liberal with the details) that you are working on.

ProTip 2: Write your “alley-oop” post with a lighter tone by incorporating humor, music, art, illustrations to make your post more interesting (pictures are okay but not of yourself). I chose to share a Spotify playlist which is not too common on LinkedIn to make my post stand out. I also used the lyrics from the songs in the playlist to craft the post for extra creativity points.

2. Knock your “moment of success” post out of the park

Okay apologies for all the sports references..they just work best sometimes!

So now you have told the world your problem you are trying to solve in real time. Congratulations because that takes guts! Now watch the magic happen when you find a solution, complete that project or find a job and write an epic “moment of success” post that will get people talking about you.

Treat your moment of success like you just hit a home run!

What I did:

I was able to leverage my 1600 LinkedIn connections to reach 11,733 views for my moment of success posts

Write a good hook, mention something trendy in the news or an industry related buzzword.

Announce your good news with details- be sure to write details.

Include an image to increase views!

Remember each time someone who reacts to your post- the post will show up in their network’s newsfeed.

What you can do:

ProTip 1: Write the moment of success post with gratitude. No one likes a brag or even a humble brag. Thank the people who helped you solve your problem directly or indirectly- be sure to actually mean it!

ProTip 2: Your post is going to engage not only your 1st connections on LinkedIn but also their 1st connections aka your 2nd connections. This post is a perfect opportunity to expand your online network and converting 2nd connections into 1st!

3. Respond to each comment in the comment section to engage your network

This is absolutely a game changer- talk to every single person who leaves a comment on your blog post!

What I did:

What you can do:

ProTip1: You never really know who is watching. It doesn’t really matter how you respond but taking the time to reply to the individual “congratulations” will do wonders in engaging your 1st connections.

ProTip2: For the people that you do know personally (friends, former classmates or co workers) write a more personal comment that will show even more of your personality and how you interact with others.
